This post will be all positive I’m afraid for windows. It costs effort to migrate to another operating system, see section troubleshooting but I didn’t doubt during this crawling behind my head sometimes. The African style caused by the drums and colors make me relaxed again and then mostly you see why you where stuck. After a few days I was already far but after a far more productive!
Why do you safe time with Ubuntu:
- In general is far more speedy and performance is far more stable so you now how long things take after a while. Bootup is a little more fast and shutdown consideral more fast but more important is that it’s everyday the same like a computer should be
- More secure means less worry and with all effort still the desktop slowed down or froze after a few weeks and all the spyware ad antivirus tools needed to be updated and run and then mostly it was ok for a while. So no hassle with virussen means a big timesafer.
- No more worries about licensecodes and asking or browsing for hacked software.
- Happy user is more efficient.
- Documentation is far more userfriendly. I think this is caused by juristic simplicity compared to microsoft and for microsoft help is a commecial thing as well.
- …..
A few things that didn’t work under windows and now do:
- Mouse
Can connect the mouse at the front usb port now which improves my workspace. - Fotocamera
This now works without the factory driver so just go. I once couldn’t take photo’s for weeks because I was traveling and the driver was corrupted under windows. - Sound
I was always anoyed about the sound volume under windows. After having some trouble with sound recording now I can boost my speakers to the max and enjoy music and video far more.
I’m not a heavy user I discover. This is also caused by working online as much as possible. I use google mainly to achieve this. So my office documents/mail/reader(feeds) is in google. The programs I use on the PC are mainly:
Firefox
OpenOffice
GIMP
Skype
lftp (this is a very powerfull ftp program which makes the use off telnet less necessary and is helpfull for host providers who don’t support telnet)
I installed record-my-gtk and skype with synaptic. With record you can make your own desktop video with comment.
OK, one problem I have is the video. I tried to install a few codecs and now my movieplayer doesn’t play sound with every format. I avoid this by using vlc, when I put a bit effort in here I will update the video/codec section.
